Pocket Depth Reduction Surgery and Receding Gums

One of the ways to grow receding gums back is to use a process called pocket depth reduction. In this surgical procedure, doctors will take steps to reduce the size of the pockets that opened up as a result of the bacteria build up in the mouth that led to receding gums. If your condition has worsened to a point where improved dental hygiene and standard deep cleansing is not effective, the next step in the process may be to use pocket depth reduction surgery. What Happens?
During pocket depth reduction, the dentist’s goal is to grow receding gums back by giving the gums the ability to get back in place. Here is what may happen in this procedure.

• The dentist will conduct a standard dental procedure in which the teeth are cleaned. Usually scaling and root planing are a necessary part of this process. Deep cleaning the teeth is necessary.
• The dentist will then fold back the gums that are affected by the recession. These are the receding gums themselves. The dentist will gently fold back the gums using a tool.
• The dentist then removes the bacteria that are growing in these pockets. The pocket is the space between the gums and the teeth. By removing these bacteria, the dentist is able to give the gums the ability to grow. Receding gums need this bacteria removed.
• Then, the dentist will reposition the gums so that he gum tissue is placed over the tooth root again, covering up the area where the bacteria has grown and done damage.

This procedure reduces the size of the deep pockets that form or in some cases may even eliminate these pockets. This gives the gums the ability to re-grow in this area. To grow receding gums, those bacteria need to be removed first. Then, the gums will begin to naturally grow back in place.

Pocket depth reduction surgery is one of the more complex types of procedures. It can be painful and it can be expensive.
