Using a good dental regime and product can improve your periodontal health as well as everyday life. Honestly, it is not really that simple but it can definitely be a step in the right direction. Many people assume that regular brushing and occasional flossing are all there is to good dental hygiene, but that is only a start. Lack of education about periodontal disease can be one reason people are not understand the seriousness of these dental problems.

Bacteria naturally occur and actually thrive in the warm moist environment of the mouth. These bacteria are the primary culprit of the dreaded “halitosis” or bad breath. Bad breath, while it may be offensive to others is really a symptom of what may lead to more serious health concerns such as gingivitis or periodontal disease. To combat the bacteria that cause halitosis, gingivitis, and periodontal disease, a person needs to take every precaution available. Brushing, flossing, and using a good oral product will result in fresh breath and a pain free visit to the dentist.

It is not only important to maintain good oral hygiene for your personal life, it is important for your physical health as well. Poor oral hygiene causes infection that easily penetrates the sensitive lining of the mouth and gums and into your bloodstream. Left untreated, infections can lead to serious medical problems such as heart attack, stroke, and diabetes.

If these conditions seem to far fetched, consider how you will look as advanced periodontal disease sets in and your teeth begin to fall out. These conditions can easily be prevented by using good oral hygiene. Good oral hygiene consists of a few basic steps and precautions. Everyone should:

Brush and floss regularly

Maintain a proper diet

See a dentist twice a year

Visiting the dentist is associated with a painful experience by many people and the leading cause is tooth sensitivity and tender gums. These are typically signs that tartar has began to build up on the teeth which provide a nice comfortable place for bacteria to hide and grow. As the bacteria grow, it finds new and better places to feed, deep under the gums. Bacteria causes the gums to recede and form pockets which only provide a place for more bacteria to live. These are some basic examples of why it is so important to educate youself about periodontal disease.

The growing concern for health has people of all ages visiting their doctor scheduling tests and blood work. Unfortunately for most they simply overlook a disease that can be dangerous not only to physical health but to emotional health as well. The disease we are speaking of is advanced periodontal disease. Most people have a degree of periodontal disease and when not treated it can eat away at the gum and tissues causing the loss of teeth. With the loss of teeth many people experience emotional turmoil because of their appearance.

There are serious side effects associated with untreated advanced periodontal disease. What comes as a shock to most people that believe that they are dentally educated is the fact that advanced periodontal disease can lead to very serious medical conditions.

Increased risk of heart disease/heart attack

Stroke

Respiratory disorders

Diabetes

These very serious medical conditions are caused by the over growth of bacteria from the mouth that enter into the bloodstream leading to infection. So many discredit the fact that good dental hygiene is only brushing their teeth, but it is so much more important than that. It is important to also use a product that leaves your mouth clean and prevent the spread of bacteria. While brushing and flossing are good hygiene habits you must also watch for the symptoms of gum disease.

Advanced periodontal disease is the leading cause of tooth loss in adults. Periodontal disease is an overgrowth of bacteria that has gone untreated. Bacteria is almost always one of the key causes of periodontal problems. The bacteria in the mouth cause the gums to become inflamed and eventually the gums will begin to recede. This allows for pockets between the teeth and gums. These pockets allow bacteria to become trapped and give more of a space for feeding. The longer the gum disease is allowed to continue the more loss you will experience. In order to combat advanced periodontal disease, a combination of good oral hygiene, regular dental visits can slow the progression of the disease.

Much of the data on gum disease states that periodontal problems are a silent destruction of the bones that hold your teeth. This is because it takes time to develop in to periodontal disease. It does not happen over night. What many like to blame on the silent destruction could have actually been avoided if the person would have taken precautions. Precautions such as proper oral hygiene, regular visits to the dentist, balanced diet, flossing and most of all watching for symptom of other periodontal problems will reduce your risk. Your body warns you when something is wrong. Symptoms such as bleeding gums, halitosis, loose teeth, receding gums, tender gums are some of the issues that are occurring during this time. If you will listen to the dentist and participate in educating yourself, like you are doing now, you can prevent many periodontal problems. Here are some common periodontal problems

Sores in the mouth

Trench mouth

Halitosis

Bleeding gums

Loose teeth

Receding gums

Inflamed or red gums

If you are experiencing any of the above symptoms consider yourself warned. Do not ignore what your body is trying to tell you. If you are headed for a cliff there are road signs to warn you. It is the same principle, the symptoms are your road signs. First, sores in the mouth can suggest that built up tartar is holding bacteria that are irritating your gums or inner lip. Not every sore is caused by periodontal problems, but if sores are coupled with other signs seek help. Secondly, halitosis is normal to a certain extend. Everyone suffers from early morning breath or bad breath from the hamburger and onions that you ate for lunch. If the halitosis persists or worsens it could be because of the toxins released from the bacteria in the mouth. Thirdly, loose teeth can be a sign of deteriorating bones that hold your teeth in place. Fourthly, receding gums are when the gum begins to pull away from the tooth causing what is known as a pocket. Bacteria hide in these pockets where your tooth brush can not reach. Receding gums will become red and inflamed causing sensitivity.

Everyone experiences some dental related discomfort or pain at some point in their lives. The question is, “Do you have an ongoing dental disease?” To answer this question we must first look at what common dental diseases are abound. Next we should look at the issue of prevention. The most common dental diseases are:

* Halitosis (bad breath)

* Canker Sores

* Cold Sores (Fever Blisters)

* Gingivitis

* Periodontitis

Halitosis. One of the most common dental diseases that patients are faced with is halitosis. Halitosis, or bad breath is generally only an embarrassing problem due to many of the foods we eat on a daily basis. Garlic, onions, and other strongly spices foods are the most common culprits. Once, the food enters the bloodstream it is converted in the lungs to the air we exhale. Halitosis can also results from more critical problems such as an excess of bacteria that has grown in the food particles left in the mouth. Tobacco can also cause persistent bad breath. If tobacco use is the cause, the only remedy is to quit. To curtail halitosis, the best remedy is maintaining good oral hygiene. It is wise to brush after every meal and flosses every day.

Canker sores are a very common dental problem that affects a significant portion of the population. Canker sores are small ulcers that occur inside the mouth. They are not contagious and generally return. The exact cause of a canker sore is unknown, however many experts believe that they are caused by immune system problems, excess bacteria, or viruses in the body. To treat canker sores, over the counter remedies may help with the symptoms but time is the only known cure. The best way to prevent canker sores is to use proper oral hygiene and avoid spicy or acidic foods.

Gingivitis. Gingivitis is a form of periodontal disease that causes inflammation of the gums. Gingivitis is caused by the long term effects of plaque and bacteria that grow inside the mouth. The bacteria and the toxins they produce, cause the gums to become swollen, tender and prone to bleeding. The best remedy for prevention of Gingivitis is good oral hygiene. Semi-annual visits to your dentist are also a must.

Periodontitis. Periodontitis is part of a group of dental diseases that affects many people. Periodontitis is an extension of gingivitis that has been left untreated. The bacteria have entered pockets between the teeth and gums and have grown to a point in which the teeth become loose and eventually fall out. Periodontitis is a serious condition that can have serious consequences if left untreated.

Many people visit their doctor thinking that they have a sinus infection or upper respiratory infection. After the doctor explains that there are no physical signs of infection the patient leaves frustrated and still feeling bad. What many fail to realize is the health of your mouth is as important, if not more so, than any other part of the body. If your mouth is not healthy, you are not healthy. Problems with the teeth and mouth can cause you to have similar headaches and pressure that accompany sinus infections. Bacteria live in the mouth and serves as a breeding ground for infection that can spread throughout the body by releasing into the blood stream. Good oral hygiene is very important and the right product can keep you out of the doctor’s office. You only get one set of teeth so the products that you choose are extremely important. There is no second chance with your teeth and if you develop periodontal disease there is no cure, only a treatment and deterring the progression of the disease.

Good Oral Hygiene Can Prevent

Halitosis (bad breath)

Recessed gums

Sensitivity

Removal of plaque/tartar

Bleeding gums

Loose teeth

Gingivitis

Pockets

Proper oral hygiene will assist with the removal of food particles and buildup on the teeth. If tartar is allowed to buildup and food particles remain in the mouth the gums will recede causing what is known as pockets between the gums and teeth. This can create a hard to reach area where you are unable to brush or reach with toothpaste and toothbrush. Flossing is good, but will not reach deep inside the pockets to cleanse. Eventually these pockets will become infected and can cause severe pain and danger of other medical conditions. It is important that you be aware of receding gums and other symptoms that could leave the raging bacteria in your mouth. If you have these symptoms there are things that you can do to prevent the further destruction of your teeth and gums. A significant key to good health is to prevent dental problems before they occur.

Preventing Dental Problems

Practice good dental hygiene

Routine visits to the Dentist

Proper diet

f your most recent visit to the dental office revealed that you have gingivitis or periodontal disease, it is time to take some serious action. Obviously your current system is not keeping your mouth as healthy as your dentist would like. Normal toothpaste is great, but it does not protect from everything and certainly does not guarantee a clean bill of dental health. You must take charge and take your oral hygiene to the next level. Many people have already revealed the secret that has changed their lives and dental visits in the process. Most patients have some anxiety and dread when it is time to go to the dentist. There is always that unknown of whether or not the hygienist will have to spend an hour picking at your teeth, which can hurt.

Gingivitis is also known as gum disease and left untreated can develop into periodontal disease resulting in tooth loss. At this stage there is no permanent damage and you can still reclaim good oral health. What the dentist is telling you is that your teeth have a build up of bacteria that are hiding in the plaque and tartar on your teeth. If you have noticed that your gums are red and inflamed it is because the bacteria produces toxins and are harmful not only to your teeth and gums, but the rest of your body as well. At this state your teeth are still firmly seated and there is not any damage to the bone, which holds your teeth. If you do not take action today, the gingivitis will progress and you will develop periodontal disease which causes permanent damage. What makes gum disease so dangerous is that patients discount their oral health and ignore it which allows the bacteria to grow and destroy your bone and teeth. This is a silent but destructive disease that can be PREVENTED.

Gingivitis can be caused by a number of things. The causes are not always from improper care of the teeth and gums like many people assume. Often times the situations that cause gingivitis are events that the patient has little control over. What you can control is the knowledge about your oral hygiene and how you use this knowledge. If you are aware of the things that put you at an increased risk of gingivitis you are more likely to resolve the problem, therefore preventing gingivitis and periodontal disease.

Causes of Gingivitis

Hormonal changes

Smoking

Poor oral hygiene

Certain medications

Illness

As you can see there are a number of life events that can cause an increased risk of gingivitis that is not necessarily due to improper care. If you are experiencing hormonal changes such as pregnancy or menopause then take extra precaution and practice extra oral hygiene. Prevention is very important when speaking about gum disease. You can never get your teeth back so don’t take the risk. Smoking not only puts you at a higher risk for many medical conditions, but also gum disease.

Recent research suggests that there is a common link between diabetes and periodontal disease. Diabetics are at an increased risk of infection and periodontal disease is basically an infection of the gums. In advanced periodontal disease the increased bacteria in the mouth can enter into the blood stream causing not only a risk of infection, but also a weakened immune system. The absolute last thing that a diabetic needs is anymore of a jeopardized immune system or susceptibility.

Uncontrolled diabetes causes problems with sugar levels in the blood. A high level of blood sugar can lead to increased bacteria in the mouth which feeds the periodontal disease. Glucose is a sugar that is linked to diabetes and actually causes the bacteria to thrive. This is just one of the complications that a diabetic can experience with the disease. Diabetics are more at risk for periodontal disease so they must take extra precautions to ensure their teeth and gums remain healthy. A good way to ensure that a diabetic is maintaining appropriate oral hygiene is for them to begin using what dentists all over the world are suggesting.

Diabetes puts a person at a higher risk of serious health concerns such as heart disease, vision disorders, stroke and a host of other life threatening diseases. With the diabetic individual more susceptive to infection, it is important that the bacteria and germs in the mouth be eliminated. Some signs of periodontal disease that diabetics should watch for are:

Decreased saliva

Dry mouth

Frequent mouth sores/infections

Research has found that the destruction from periodontal disease can begin as early as six-years old in diabetic children. If your child is diabetic it is vitally important that you ensure that they have the appropriate products to prevent gum disease. The last thing that these children need to worry about is extensive dental work or increased infection due to improper oral hygiene.

Benefits of a good dental product:

Kills germs and bacteria that lead to Periodontal disease

Reduces sensitivity of teeth

Reduces inflammation of gums

Eliminates halitosis (bad breath)

Kills bacteria found in the mouth

If you are diagnosed with periodontal disease talk to your dentist about how you can prevent further deterioration which will save your teeth and of course how best to cure the periodontal disease. Your body will provide you with warning symptoms so that you can seek the help of a dentist. Problems with the mouth and teeth should never be ignored. If left untreated you can experience infection, increased risk of diseases and the loss of your teeth.

If left untreated the gingivitis advances causing the bacteria to hide in the plaque buildup on the teeth and releases poison. In most cases if the patient is healthy the added toxins released inside the mouth are not harmful, but if the person has a jeopardized immune system the additional bacteria can be very serious. There are a number of serious medical conditions that have been linked to periodontal disease, so there is no need to chance your oral health.

There are stages of periodontal disease that can lead to health problems as well as the loss of teeth. Depending how advanced the periodontal disease is depends on the type of treatment. In the beginning stages the patient can change their oral hygiene habits such as diet, and invest in a product that cleans the teeth and gums. It does not have to prescription nor the most expensive on the market. Expensive does not equate to effectiveness. There is no substitute for proper oral hygiene and regular dental visits.

If plaque buildup is left untreated it can and will develop into a serious condition known as periodontitis. To simplify this is gum disease and can cause infection, tooth loss, pain with the gums and teeth as well put you at risk for more serious health diseases. The best treatment of periodontal disease is prevention. Periodontal disease can be treated, but the best method is to prevent it from developing.

Halitosis (bad breath)

Bleeding gums

Sores on the gums

Receding gums

Loose teeth

The bulleted symptoms are all areas of concerns that should never be ignored. If you have these symptoms not only do you need to take immediate action, you should begin practing good oral hygiene daily and take care of your overall health as well. As we stated before if the symptoms are ignored the periodontal disease can become very severe requiring more invasive procedures. Not only are the procedures costly they can be very painful as well. So protect yourself and the family with good oral hygiene, dental visits and a proper diet. This is the first key to protecting the health of your mouth. Otherwise you can look forward to the following.

Surgery is used in moderate to severe cases of periodontal disease. This consist of many different types of procedures depending on the dentists recommendations. In some cases the laser is used to remove excess tartar buildup or reconstruct the deteriorated bone.

A soft tissue graft is a procedure where the gum is repositioned in order to eliminate some of the pockets or where the gums have pulled away from the teeth. This is a hiding area for bacteria and can cause more serious problems.

In less severe cases, the teeth can be cleaned removing the tartar buildup and plaque.
