Nezelof’s Syndrome and Oral ThrushNezelof’s syndrome is a rare health condition that affects the immune system. When you have this condition, the cells that would normally help to fight off infection are not able to do so effectively. As a result, people with Nezelof’s often experience infections. One of the infections that they are particularly prone to is oral thrush. If you have this health condition, then you need to know the symptoms of oral thrush so that you can spot it quickly and seek out treatment. It is important to get treatment promptly when you have Nezelof’s syndrome because as the condition worsens, the more difficult it will be for your body to fight it off. Oral thrush is caused by a fungus called Candida albicans. Many people actually have this fungus in their mouths normally in small numbers. When your immune resistance is low, the amounts of Candida can multiply and result in oral thrush. The symptoms of the condition to keep an eye out for are little patches of white or yellowish coating on the tongue. These patches often look like cottage cheese and you cannot rub them off. When rubbed, the patches may in fact bleed and become painful and inflamed. The patches can be found on the tongue, cheeks or throat. Those with Nezelof’s syndrome have to take steps to prevent oral thrush from developing in the first place. The best way to do this is to have a high level of dental hygiene. Brush your teeth at least twice a day, floss and use a mouth wash that has been recommended for you by your dentist. Some mouth rinses may not be appropriate and may actually increase your chance of developing oral thrush. You can also control the risk of developing oral thrush by being careful with your diet. Reduce the amount of sugar that you eat, especially refined sugars. The reason for this is that Candida loves to feed on sugar and it will encourage it to multiply. Eat lots of vitamin rich foods, particularly those that are high in vitamin B, C and iron. Drinking plenty of water throughout the day is also important to ensure that the mouth is hydrated and the normal Ph level is maintained. With Nezelof’s syndrome, you will always have to be careful that you are following doctor’s and dentist’s recommendations in order to avoid developing oral thrush or other infections that can compromise your health.
