NATURAL TOOTHPASTE : THE FACTS

Traditional toothpaste companies don’t want you to know the benefits of natural toothpaste. Loaded with synthetic chemicals that are too long to say, regular toothpaste can be a danger to your health.

Some toothpaste can contain chemicals that can be toxic (poisonous) if taken in large doses.  Regular toothpaste should never be swallowed and children who are too young to brush and spit properly should not use traditional toothpaste to prevent an illness or poisoning. You may also be surprised to know that traditional toothpaste may also contain sweeteners like saccharin which is a synthetic additive used in food and beauty products.  Saccharin in large doses has been linked to bladder cancer in mice and its side effects are not totally understood.

Another trigger to oral health complications is sodium laurel sulfate (SLS).  SLS is a chemical used to provide the foaming action in toothpaste and soaps and is a powerful detergent that can trigger severe allergies in some people.  SLS should be used with caution to prevent a complication.

The term “natural toothpaste” simply means that the toothpaste contains products that come from nature.  It may or may not be in a paste form.  Some cleaners are clear liquids and others are in a form that you are more familiar with like a paste or gel.  These cleaners are derived from plants, herbs or natural oils that are beneficial to the mouth and effective in removing bacteria.

You may think that natural toothpaste won’t really get your teeth clean, but think again. Natural toothpaste can be made to whiten teeth or add abrasives like baking soda to remove stains or sticky plaque. Natural toothpaste is also less likely to disrupt the natural balance inside the mouth. When the natural order of moisture, acidity and other elements are disrupted it can lead to other problems including bad breath, cavities and gum infections.

Oral health is also key to the health of your entire body.  Preventing heart disease, strokes and even premature birth may all hold some origins in our dental health.  Taking control of your body can be easy with the right steps and the right natural products.
