WHAT IS IN TRADITIONAL BREATH FRESHENERS?

Everyday of our lives the majority of us get up in the morning, eat breakfast, take a shower, and brush our teeth before heading out to work.  When we are finished with work and come back home, we eat our dinner and maybe watch some television.  Then, it is off to bed, but not before we brush our teeth or gargle some mouthwash if we practice daily oral hygiene.  In the rush of our daily lives do we ever stop to think what we are cleaning our teeth and gums with? More than likely we don’t because it is a routine to which we have grown accustomed.

Just for moment, let us stop and study what we are cleaning our teeth and gums with as well as what we are using to freshen our breath.  A list of ingredients and even warning labels can be found on all items that are used as traditional breath fresheners.  The most common ingredients found in traditional breath fresheners include:

  • Sodium fluoride
  • Dyes
  • Sodium Lauryl Sulfate (SLS)
  • Triclosan
  • Hydrated Silica
  • Alcohol
  • Sugar

These ingredients may sound harmless; however, if consumed and/or swallowed in large quantities they could kill a person, especially children.  These ingredients also have the ability to harm the body over a period of time.

The first ingredient found in all toothpaste is sodium fluoride.  Sodium fluoride is also a very common ingredient which is found in rat poison.

Traditional breath fresheners also contain enormous amounts of dyes.  The dyes are an artificial coloring that gives the traditional breath freshener its color.  These dyes are made from coal tar oil which means we are actually putting a petroleum product in our mouths.  These dyes have also been known to cause severe allergic reactions, asthma attacks, headaches, fatigue, lack of concentration, nausea, nervousness, and even cancer.

SLS is the most harmful ingredient found in traditional breath fresheners such as toothpaste.  SLS is a foaming agent.  When toothpaste is used the SLS works by foaming up which gives the indication to the user that the toothpaste is working.  Studies show that SLS can be quite corrosive and harmful to the skin.

Triclosan is a substance found in many traditional breath fresheners such as toothpaste.  Triclosan is a pesticide and is known for its antibacterial properties.  Some researchers believe that triclosan may cause cancer in humans.

Hydrated silica, another common ingredient found in traditional breath fresheners such as toothpaste, is known as a whitening substance; however, hydrated silica is very abrasive and damages tooth enamel.  Hydrated silica is made from a crystallized substance that is found in flint, quartz, and sand.

Traditional breath fresheners also contain an abundant amount of sugar and alcohol.  Alcohol is a huge component of mouthwash.  Traditional mouthwash normally contains twenty-five percent or more alcohol.  This may seem like nothing; however, if large amounts are swallowed the results could be deadly especially in children.  Another substantial ingredient in traditional breath fresheners is sugar.  If it didn’t taste so good most people wouldn’t use it.  Sugar actually contributes to harmful bacteria in the mouth causing oral health problems.

Now that we know the ingredients of traditional breath fresheners, they might not seem as harmless as we thought originally.

WHAT CAN BE FOUND IN NATURAL BREATH FRESHENERS?

If a product claims to be “natural” we must investigate to see if the product truly contains all natural ingredients.  Natural breath fresheners may come in many forms such as mints, sprays, and gums; however, traditional breath fresheners are also found in the same forms.  The difference in a natural and traditional breath freshener is that the natural breath freshener should be free from dyes, chemicals, and artificial sweeteners.

Natural breath fresheners are designed with ingredients that are readily available in nature.  Thousands of years ago, people were using natural breath fresheners although they probably didn’t know it at the time.  Substances from the mint and the herb family are very effective at freshening the breath and are very common substances that are found in natural breath fresheners.

Herbs such as cloves, anise seed, and cardamom seeds are common substances that were used to freshen the breath regularly over four thousand years ago.  These ingredients are still in use today.

Mints such as peppermint and spearmint are commonly found in today’s natural breath fresheners.  Mints may come in the form of a mint leaf and/or oil.  Peppermint contains anti-bacterial properties that work to kill the bacteria that is within the mouth.  Spearmint has anti-inflammatory properties, as well as anti-bacterial properties.  Many people today grow these types of mints in their herb gardens.  The leaves of a mint plant are safe to eat; therefore, chewing on a couple of mint leaves will freshen the breath and will also aid with the digestion process.  Another natural ingredient found in modern natural breath fresheners is almond oil.  Almond oil is an effective anti-inflammatory agent and also lubricates the mouth.  A natural breath freshener that contains all three of these oils has been proven effective at killing the bacteria that is within the mouth and also keeps the bacteria from reforming.   If used daily, this natural breath freshener will continuously clean the mouth and provide long lasting oral health benefits.

Natural breath fresheners work for long periods of time; however, traditional breath fresheners only work temporarily and mask the problem.    Many times traditional breath fresheners may make oral health problems worse.  Ingredients such as sugar found in traditional breath fresheners may cause bacteria to reproduce.  Other ingredients such as alcohol may cause the mouth to dry out.  Dry mouth has been linked to many oral health problems.

Therefore, we should consider using a product with long-term benefits rather than a potentially harmful product with temporary results.

THE MAIN BENEFITS OF NATURAL BREATH FRESHENERS

With every decision we make, we must always weigh the pros and cons.  Sometimes the decisions we make are quick, ever day living decisions with no long lasting effects.  Other times, a decision may affect our lifestyle for an extended period of time.   Deciding to use a natural breath freshener is a choice with continuing benefits.

Anytime we choose to purchase or use a product that is safe for the environment and/or our health we should give ourselves a pat on the back.  Using things that are provided to us by nature is so much better then using something that is chemically formulated.  It is also important to consider any additional incentives that using a natural product may supply to our overall health and well being.

A natural breath freshener provides many additional incentives to our oral health and overall health as well as providing fresh breath.  A natural breath freshener that has proven effective at providing fresh breath is comprised of three oils.  These oils are peppermint, spearmint, and almond.  The formulation of these oils work at not only eliminating bad breath, but they also clean the oral cavity, and kill the bad bacteria found within the mouth that cause numerous oral diseases.  The formulation of peppermint oil, spearmint oil, and almond oil can also eliminate the need for the use of traditional toothpaste and mouthwash.  Traditional mouthwash and toothpaste are used daily by millions of people; however, traditional mouthwash and toothpaste do not linger in the mouth and provide ongoing cleaning actions.  Therefore, they do not freshen the breath on an ongoing basis.  Traditional mouthwash is just a temporary breath freshener and many times it just masks the bad breath for a short period of time until the bad breath returns with a vengeance.  Since natural breath fresheners are comprised of natural ingredients that are found in nature, the concern of putting unknown chemicals in the body can be avoided.  Many traditional breath fresheners are full of sugar, food colorings, and alcohol which are not found in natural breath fresheners.  Ingredients such as sugar may actually contribute to bad breath and increase harmful bacteria in the mouth.  Alcohol contained in traditional mouthwash may dry out the mouth and contribute to a host of oral health problems.  Because of this people with certain medical problems and even children can use the natural breath freshener and not have to worry if they are harming themselves in the long run.

Even though the supply of natural breath fresheners are not as readily available as traditional breath fresheners it helps to know that the benefits of using a natural breath freshener heavily outweigh the benefits of using a more common traditional breath freshener.

NATURAL BREATH FRESHENERS ARE BETTER FOR YOU

Determining whether or not a particular product is more beneficial for one’s health can be a difficult decision.  However, based on numerous research and facts it does appear that natural breath fresheners are much better for an individual than the more common traditional breath fresheners.

For those that are concerned about their overall health and are genuinely concerned about what they put into their body, natural breath fresheners are the route to take.  When compared to traditional breath fresheners, natural breath fresheners do so much more than just freshen the breath.

Natural breath fresheners are made up of organic ingredients.  They are much better for the body than a traditional breath freshener.  Traditional breath fresheners are comprised of chemicals that are ineffective and unhealthy for us.  Aside from freshening the breath, natural breath fresheners also offer other incentives to our overall health.  Natural breath fresheners have been proven effective at eliminating the bacteria that causes bad breath, cleaning the oral cavity, and also preventing numerous oral diseases.  A natural breath freshener that is effective at doing all of this is comprised of three oils: peppermint, spearmint, and almond.  These oils together eliminate the need for traditional toothpaste, traditional mouthwash, and breath mints.  Just eliminating three extra products has to be encouraging that one natural product is the best.

Natural breath fresheners are superior because they keep working for longer periods of time.  Traditional mouthwash and toothpaste are rinsed out of the mouth as soon as we are finished with our oral care.

In addition to working only temporarily, conventional breath fresheners contain chemicals and additives that can make bad breath worse and complicate oral problems.  Traditional breath fresheners contain alcohol that actually dries out the mouth and causes other oral health problems.  Plus, alcohol may be harmful if swallowed in large doses.  It can be fatal in children if they consume large doses.  Check the warming labels.  Conventional breath fresheners also contain sugar.  Sugar may make bad breath worse as bacteria feed off of it.  By increasing harmful bacteria in the mouth, the sugar in traditional breath fresheners may contribute to oral health problems.  Therefore, natural breath fresheners provide long lasting fresh breath and do not play a role in causing oral health issues.

By comparing the pros and cons, we can make a wise decision when selecting a product to freshen our breath and provide oral health benefits.  A product that contains peppermint, spearmint, and almond oils is the natural choice!

NATURAL BREATH FRESHENERS

A natural breath freshener is a substance comprised of organic ingredients.  Unlike traditional breath fresheners that contain chemicals and dyes, natural breath fresheners are made up of ingredients that are healthy and safe for the user.

Natural breath fresheners may come in the form of sprays, mints, mouthwash, and gum.  Many traditional breath fresheners that do not contain all natural ingredients can be purchased at local shopping centers.  Natural breath fresheners are usually harder to find and must be purchased from a specialty store that stocks mainly all organic products.

Natural breath fresheners should contain one hundred percent all natural ingredients; otherwise, the product is not natural.  Natural breath fresheners also do not contain warning labels.  There is no need for a warning label because the product is safe for the consumer to use.

The majority of natural breath fresheners contain oils.  Typical oils found in a natural breath freshener are peppermint, spearmint, and almond.  Other natural ingredients that are typically found in these types of breath fresheners include cinnamon and cloves.  Studies show that one particular natural breath freshener that contains peppermint oil, spearmint oil, and almond oil has been proven effective at providing fresh breath.  This product also performs well at cleaning the oral cavity and is also effective at killing the bad bacteria that reside in the mouth that cause numerous oral diseases.  A natural breath freshener is also designed to kill the twenty-two strains of bacteria that reside in the mouth.

Over four thousand years ago, people used herbs, such as leaves and roots to cleanse their breath.  The most common herb that people used was cloves.  In the Middle Ages, people chewed anise seed as a natural breath freshener.  Today, it is not unusual for a person to chew on a mint leaf in order to provide fresh breath.  Chewing on a mint leaf not only freshens the breath, but also aids in digestion.  The ingredients in natural breath fresheners also have individual properties that work to do certain jobs. Peppermint oils contain anti-bacterial properties that work at killing the bacteria that is within the mouth.  Spearmint oil has anti-bacterial properties anti-inflammatory properties.  Almond oils work as an anti-inflammatory agent and they also lubricate the mouth.  All of these oils work together to kill the bacteria that is within the mouth and aid in the treatment and prevention of many oral health problems.  As a civilization, we have come full circle due to the fact that we are once again using products found in nature for our health needs.

COMPARING NATURAL AND TRADITIONAL BREATH FRESHENERS

Many people think that a breath freshener comes in the form of a mint, gum, and/or mouthwash.  These breath fresheners are typically referred to as traditional breath fresheners.  However, there are breath fresheners available today that are classified as natural breath fresheners.

So what is the difference between a traditional breath freshener and a natural breath freshener?  A traditional breath freshener contains numerous chemicals and added ingredients such as sugar and food coloring that the body does not need.  A natural breath freshener contains only natural ingredients that have been proven effective at preventing bad breath and killing the bacteria that is found within the mouth that causes bad breath.

Traditional breath fresheners which have been used for centuries have the ability to cover up bad breath only for a short period of time.  Most of the time the bad breath returns and it is worse than it was before the traditional breath freshener was used.  The sugar found in traditional breath fresheners plays a role in causing bad breath to reoccur.  The bacteria in the mouth that causes bad breath feeds off sugar that is found in things that we eat and drink, including traditional breath fresheners.  These additives are only masking the bad breath and are actually contributing to reoccurring bad breath.  Mouthwash, which is used regularly for those wishing to freshen up their breath, also contains ingredients that are unhealthy for us.  Most mouthwash contains at least twenty-five percent alcohol.  Alcohol dries out the mouth and plays a part in causing some oral health problems.

For those with healthy lifestyles and those that prefer not to introduce chemicals into their body an all natural breath freshener is a great commodity.  A natural breath freshener contains no added chemicals, no additional sugar, and no food colorings.  A natural breath freshener only contains ingredients that are found in nature.  The majority of natural breath fresheners contain oils.  Such oils include peppermint oil, almond oil, and spearmint oil.  Other natural ingredients that are typically found in natural breath fresheners are cinnamon and cloves.  Organic breath fresheners stay in the mouth as they are not washed out and keep working for long periods of time.  Natural breath fresheners are effective at eliminating bad breath as well.

The benefits of using a breath freshener with organic ingredients are many and should be considered the next time anyone purchases these types of products.

INGREDIENTS OF NATURAL BREATH FRESHENERS

Natural breath fresheners consist of organic ingredients versus traditional breath fresheners that consist of chemicals and dyes.

Typical ingredients found in natural breath fresheners include:

  • Peppermint
  • Almond
  • Spearmint
  • Cloves
  • Cinnamon

Throughout history, before there was a natural breath freshener that could be bought, people used what was available in nature for fresh breath and oral health.  Herbs were a very common substance that could be used to freshen the breath.  Many times, people would chew on a nutmeg root or an angelica root.  Chewing on these roots for several minutes would help to freshen the breath as well as maintain a sweet breath.  Another common ingredient found in natural breath fresheners is mint.  Mint is a very common substance that can be found in breath mints; however, chewing on a mint leaf is just as effective as chewing on a breath mint.  Mint leaves that have been eaten to freshen the breath also aid in digestion.

Natural breath fresheners are specifically designed to provide long lasting fresh breath and also offer other health benefits as well.  The scientific formulation of organic ingredients work together to treat and prevent oral health issues.   Specifically, a product that has proven effective at providing fresh breath contains peppermint oils, almond oils, and spearmint oils. The formulation of these oils not only freshen the breath, they also clean the oral cavity and prevent bacteria from forming which causes bad breath.  These oils are also formulated to clean the teeth and tongue and also get between the teeth and gums.  This is important especially in the prevention and elimination of bacteria.  Natural breath fresheners are also formulated to kill all twenty-two bacterial strains that are found commonly in the mouth.  Each ingredient has special properties that work to eliminate a specific bacteria or pathogen.  Other ingredients found in natural breath fresheners keep performing to prevent harmful bacteria from returning.

The formulation of a natural breath freshener also has the ability to eliminate the need for any over-the-counter breath freshener, such as toothpaste, mouthwash, and breath mints.

Natural breath fresheners are safe to use and provide a substantial amount of benefits to our overall health.  Read the label on natural breath fresheners, there should be no warning labels like those found on traditional breath fresheners.  Like our ancestors, we can still use an all natural product to keep us healthy as well as aid in our oral health.

ARE NATURAL BREATH FRESHENERS RIGHT FOR ME?

This question can only be answered through careful research and consideration of the health, lifestyle, and economic issues related to each consumer.

There are people in this world that would go to extreme measures to maintain healthy teeth and gums.  There are also other people who perform very minimum oral health maintenance as well as those that do not seem to care at all about their oral health.  Therefore, determining if a natural breath freshener is right for a person is strictly up to the individual to decide.

Natural breath fresheners are scientifically formulated to do much more than a typical traditional breath freshener can do.  A natural breath freshener that is scientifically formulated with peppermint oil, almond oil, and spearmint oil is a proven bacteria fighter that kills the bacteria that is within the mouth and keeps the bacteria from reforming.  There are approximately twenty-two strains of bacteria that linger within our mouths and the formulation of these oils has the ability to combat them all.  The formulation of these oils is so effective that they replace the need for traditional toothpaste, traditional mouthwash, and breath mints.  Therefore, switching to a natural breath freshener may save the consumer money in the long run.  Also, the oils in natural breath fresheners are not rinsed out of the mouth; therefore, the oils are continuously working.

Many people continue to use traditional breath fresheners, thinking that every time they pop a breath mint they are maintaining their fresh breath; however, that is not the case.  Traditional breath fresheners actually make bad breath worse.  Traditional breath fresheners are comprised of sugar, dyes, and alcohol, all of which are bad for our bodies.  Breath fresheners with these ingredients mask the bad breath for a short period of time before it comes back.  Also, the ingredients in traditional breath fresheners like sugar actually give the bacteria something to feed upon, which results in bad breath.  Alcohol, which is a common ingredient found in mouthwash actually dries out the mouth which again encourages the growth of bacteria. A dry mouth can actually increase the chances of getting certain oral cavity diseases.

Natural breath fresheners are the right choice for those people who are concerned with maintaining good oral health.  People that choose to use a natural breath freshener not only avoid using chemicals and other ingredients that are harmful to the body, but also are benefiting from a product that provides long term oral health care.  Natural breath fresheners are safer products when compared to conventional breath fresheners and may save the consumer time and money in the long term.
