The right cure for a mouth sore will ultimately depend on the cause of that mouth sore. And there are lots of things that can cause mouth sores.
The causes range from something as simple as loose dentures rubbing against the skin of the mouth, eating too much food high in acidic content, brushing the teeth too hard, or not getting enough sleep.
At the other end of the spectrum mouth sores can also be caused by more serious conditions such as a virus like herpes, immune disorders like lupus and inflammatory bowel diseases.
Underlying illnesses that can also contribute to a break out of mouth sores include cancer and AIDS.
If it is the case that you have dentures and you think they may be loose, the first course of action here is to visit your dentist. Over time loose dentures act as an abrasive against the gum of the mouth causing first lesions and then mouth sores.
The same is true if you wear orthodontic braces. It is very possible that they can cause discomfort by rubbing against the delicate skin on the inside of the mouth. If that’s the case, they may need to be tightened.
Acidic foods can do a lot of damage causing the ph balance of the mouth to be out of balance. When acidic foods linger on teeth and gums, it causes bacteria, which can in turn cause those teeth and gums to rot or get infected. If that bacteria travels to other parts of the mouth, mouth sores are the result.
Combine a diet that is high in acid foods with a stressful lifestyle and not enough sleep, and you put yourself at a much higher risk of getting mouth sores.
In this case an overhaul of diet and lifestyle are the order of the day. Stress and lack of sleep can have serious affects on the body’s immune system and general ability to fight infection. If you feel yourself getting over-tired, it’s time to take a break.
There are lots of home remedies for mouth sores. Gargling salt water is a simple way to kill infection in the mouth. Mix salt water with sodium bicarbonate to create a paste which can then be applied to mouth sores. This is good for killing infection and cooling inflammation.
It is also possible to find anti-inflammatory and antiseptic mouthwashes and creams in the local pharmacy which can both numb the pain of mouth sores and assist fast healing.
