The Symptoms of a Gum InfectionGum infections can cause serious problems, and can even cause irreversible damage if they’re not properly treated. Infected gums are a sign of gum disease that has reached a serious level. But, how do you know if you have a gum infection? The primary symptoms of infected gums are pain, swelling and bleeding. These are the primary symptoms of all forms of gum disease, like gingivitis, in its earlier stages, too. When your gums are infected, you will usually also experience pus between the teeth and a foul odor in the mouth. Gum infections also often cause canker sores. When gingivitis and other symptoms of gum disease are ignored at their earliest stages, they quickly turn into something worse. When early stage gum disease is ignored, it can lead to periodontal disease and serious problems. Severe gum disease can cause damage to the gums, the bones in the mouth and the teeth. Sufferers of periodontal disease often lose teeth, as the gums recede from the teeth, causing the teeth to get loose. What Causes Gum Infection? Some people are definitely more prone to gingivitis and gum disease than others, but we must all treat it the same way. The primary treatment for gingivitis is to improve your oral hygiene routine. Get regular dental cleanings twice a year, and be sure to brush at least twice a day. Flossing once a day, and rinsing with mouthwash is important, too. If your gum disease has reached the point of causing gum infection or other problems from periodontal disease, you may require professional treatment. Your dentist may prescribe antibiotics to treat the infection, and pain medications for the pain and swelling. In some cases, scaling and root planning, or even oral surgery are required to combat the problems. Gum infections are quite painful and annoying. Fortunately, if you don’t have gum disease yet, you can likely prevent it by simply stepping up your oral hygiene routine. If you find that you need more aggressive treatment to get your mouth bacteria under control, try adding all natural oral care products made from mint to your oral hygiene routine. Mint oil is one of the most powerful anti-fungal and anti-bacterial agents you can use in the mouth, and it has none of the harmful side effects you might experience from commercial oral care products. Some extra oil of mint in your oral hygiene routine may be all that is required to get your mouth bacteria free.
