Do Kids Get Gum InfectionsMost of us think of gum disease as a problem that only affects older people. And it is true that many people get periodontal disease as they age and their gums begin to recede. But, kids can certainly get gum infections, and many do. It is estimated that about 50% of kids have periodontal disease. In some cases, it is gingivitis, which is the less severe form, but in some cases, it is full blown periodontal disease. There are several factors that contribute to kids developing gum infections and other symptoms of periodontal disease so early. Genetics is definitely a factor, as are certain autoimmune diseases. But, most of the problems that cause periodontal disease, especially in children and teens, are completely preventable. The factors that typically cause periodontal disease in kids include:
So, if you have kids, there’s a good chance that their oral hygiene routine could use some improvement. To prevent gum infections and periodontal disease in your kids, be sure that they do the following:
Ensuring that your child has a good oral hygiene routine is critical to ensuring their long term oral health. You may also want to switch your kids to all natural oral care products made from natural oil of mint. There are many reasons why commercial dental care products are not good for kids. Commercial toothpastes contain sodium laurel sulfate, which is nothing more than detergent. It can cause allergic reactions and can lead to canker sores in those who are prone to them. And, it will not get your child’s teeth any cleaner than simply brushing with oil of mint products. And don’t worry that oil of mint doesn’t contain fluoride. If your child drinks fluoridated water, he’s getting plenty of fluoride. Commercial mouthwash can be just as bad, since many mouthwashes contain alcohol, which is not good for your children. Diluting an oil of mint product in water makes a much safer mouthwash. So, do your part to help ensure that your kids have good oral hygiene throughout their growing up years. You’ll be protecting them from gum disease as a child, and establishing habits that will last a lifetime.
