Can Other Health Problems Make Me More Prone to Gum Infections? It can sometimes seem like certain people have all the dental problems, while others get through life with healthy, perfect teeth. There are many factors that contribute to our oral health, and some are out of our control. Most of our dental problems are caused by bacteria in our mouth. And there are factors outside our control that help determine the amount of bacteria we have, the ease with which we can get rid of it and how our body responds to it. For example, people with Type 2 diabetes are more susceptible to gum disease. This is likely because they are more susceptible to infections in general. To make matters worse, gum disease can cause those same diabetics to have more difficulty in regulating their blood sugar. Pregnant women are more prone to gingivitis and bleeding gums. The bleeding gums can simply be a result of additional blood flow in the body. But, when a woman is pregnant, her body is more sensitive to the bacteria that cause gingivitis. If pregnancy gingivitis is not kept under control, it can cause pre-term labor. People with heart disease are more likely to have periodontal disease, and vice versa. And, even genetics can make us more likely to have problems with our teeth and gums. But, many of the problems we face with our mouths can be prevented and treated with good oral hygiene, whether the problems are caused by illnesses or just caused by not taking good care of our teeth. And, if we have outstanding factors, like diabetes, that are contributing to our oral problems, it is even more important that we be diligent about taking care of our mouths. Brushing, flossing and rinsing regularly are all critical to a healthy mouth, because they remove the bacteria that are at the root of problems like gingivitis and periodontal disease. Regular visits to the dentist for cleaning are also very important, as these cleanings remove the hardened plaque from our teeth. We can also elect to choose the best products for our oral care routine, such as those made from all natural oil of mint. Oil of mint is the best antibacterial around, and it has no artificial ingredients so it offers no side effects. There may be factors affecting your oral health that you can’t control. And, you may be more prone to gum infections than your neighbor. But, there are many factors that you can control related to your oral health with a good dental care routine.
