A Life Without Gum DiseaseIs it possible to have a life without gum disease? Of course anything is possible and as with anything, being aware of the problem is half the battle. The thing with gum disease is that there are quite a few factors that can cause it. The main cause of gum disease is a build up of plaque on the teeth which contains bacteria that are harmful for the root of the tooth and the gum. Over time this plaque can cause the tooth to root and the gum to recede. In severe cases it leads to tooth loss. Although regular brushing and flossing can go some way towards preventing the build up of plaque, there are other factors that will make you more susceptible to getting gum disease. If you smoke, recent studies have shown that smoking is amongst the top reasons for causing gum disease. Basically, everyone who smokes has an increased chance of getting gum disease. Studies have proved that it is not simply a case that some smokers get it and some don’t. All smokers are at risk of developing gum disease at some point in their smoking lives. Some people are genetically likely to develop gum disease. Modern technology does exist to test those who may be more likely to get gum disease as a result of their genetic make up. If there is a history of gum disease in the family, it’s important to go to a dentist and do the necessary tests, as early detection is key in the treatment of gum disease. Women, in particular, need to pay special attention to their health in order to ensure optimum dental health. That’s because women experience a greater level of hormone fluctuations in their body. During puberty, menopause, periods and pregnancy, how a woman cares for her body is essential in the upkeep of a healthy smile. That’s because during these times, the hormonal changes a woman experiences can affect the tissue strength throughout the body, including the mouth. That’s why brushing and flossing, as well as good diet and exercise are important for all women. More recent studies show that women with gum disease are more likely to deliver premature babies. We all know that modern life is a stress bucket and for years now, doctors have been warning against the dangers of a life with too much stress. Now dentists too are jumping on that bandwagon. If you are stressed, your immune system will be weak and anything that makes you weak puts you at higher risk of developing gum disease.
