Unknown Tooth and Gum Disease Symptoms

No one likes to think about it often, but tooth and gum disease is a part of life. Hopefully it isn't a part of your life. Even if you are diagnosed with this common problem there are a lot of ways to combat gum disease and feel better quickly. Most people are familiar with the symptoms of gum disease like halitosis and bleeding gums. However there are other signs that are less well known or you may not think to connect some of these symptoms with gum disease. If you start to notice a repeat performance with any of these illnesses and signs it may be time to consider checking with your dentist. You may have gum disease and not even know it. The plus side is that if these problems are caused by gum disease treatment will relieve these problems too.

  • Sinus infections
  • Laryngitis
  • Heartburn

It's a pretty safe bet you never made a connection between your frequent sinus infections and tooth and gum disease. Any ear, nose, and throat doctor can tell you that there is a huge relationship in the health of the orifices of the head. If one of these areas isn't healthy there is a good chance that the others won't be either. Because of the relatively small amount of space the mouth, nose, and sinus cavity share, one infection is easy to transfer to the entire body area. So if your doctor is confused on why you have so many sinus infections, the dentist may be able to clear up the issue.

Throat infections and laryngitis are similar to the sinus infections in that the whole head region drains into the throat. Since tooth and gum disease is caused by bacteria it's only a short jump to irritating the throat. That's not to say that every throat infection is due to gum disease, but gum disease certainly won't help the situation. It's just one more reason that preventing gum disease is important.

There isn't a person on this planet that wouldn't stop heartburn if they could. Like in the case of the throat infections, heartburn can be egged on by the occurrence of tooth and gum disease. You may just find that eliminating gum disease may eliminate your heartburn.
