Signs of Gum Disease

While not generally painful, the signs of gum disease are fairly distinctive. Unfortunately, these signs are ignored by people thinking they aren't serious or that they are a temporary situation. Unfortunately this can lead to some serious problems later. The key is to know what the early warning signs are and how to handle them. Like most health issues, early prevention is very helpful as well. So without further ado, here is a short list of some of the symptoms of gum disease.

  • Mild bad breath or halitosis
  • Bleeding gums
  • Sore and tender gums

Most people are familiar with an occasional bout of bad breath. Illnesses like a sinus infection and cold can cause a temporary problem with not so fresh breath. We all know that eating the wrong foods or a combination of the wrong foods can bring on the dragon breath. Remember that onion salad with garlic dressing? That wasn't a good idea. But in terms of gum disease chronic bad breath is a symptom that something is wrong. If you are experiencing habitual halitosis, it is a good idea to find out why. A trip to the dentist is definitely in order.

Another one of the signs of gum disease is bleeding gums. It is completely possible to experience bleeding gums due to a minor injury or using a toothbrush that has bristles that are too hard. But just like the halitosis, if the symptom persists it is a sign that your gums are irritated and struggling against damaging effects of bacteria. At this stage you probably have time to try some remedies at home. Practice good dental hygiene habits and eat well. Both of those habits will be helpful in preventing the damage from getting any worse.

Once again, sore and tender gums can start with a minor irritation or from having food stuck between the gum and teeth. If the unpleasant effects last though, it's time to look into the likelihood of a more serious problem. With this sign of gum disease does cause some discomfort and irritation, it is easy to ignore and the delay could prevent you from getting the help you need.
