Symptoms of Severe Gum Disease

Most people have experienced at least the occasional symptom of gum disease that can be easily treated. Severe gum disease on the other hand, can require more intensive treatment that is uncomfortable and seriously tax the capabilities of your dental insurance if you are lucky enough to have it. Many of you are familiar with the symptoms of early gum disease like bleeding gums, mild bad breath, and potentially tender gums. In the case of serious gum disease things get even more interesting.

  • Loose teeth
  • Change in your bite
  • Damage to gums and tooth roots

Unless you are a child and loosing teeth to supply the Tooth Fairy's habit, the occurrence of loose teeth isn't a good thing. Actually it's pretty bad. There is no reason for this to happen unless the gums have been damaged by the arrival of severe gum disease. Ok, so sometimes it happens due to trauma of some kind and often the tooth will firm back up in the socket on its own. The most serious repercussion of gum disease is tooth loss. If your teeth are showing signs of being loose, seek dental help now before it's too late.

You have heard of cross bites, and over bites. There are even under bites that plague people. It is a certain sign of severe gum disease if your bite suddenly changes. As an adult, any bite problem you may have should have been discovered long ago. Adult teeth don't just automatically change their shape and fit in the mouth for no reason. Gum disease is sure to be the culprit. If your situation has gotten this far out of hand, the easy reversal methods probably aren't going to be effective anymore.

As bad as loose teeth and a changed bite may sound, it's a guarantee that you are in trouble with severe gum disease if you are diagnosed with gum and tooth root damage. It will depend on how serious the damage is which treatment your dentist will recommend. The one thing that must happen to stop the gum disease is to be certain all of the gum disease causing bacteria is killed. Dental care professionals have a variety of different applications at their disposal to assist with the process. Eliminating the bacteria is absolutely essential for fighting gum disease. Gum disease can trigger a host of problems, with the right treatments, those problems don't have to be yours.

Severe gum disease is a common problem that fortunately can be treated. Knowing the signs of gum disease is important as is proper preventative care. Using a product like OraMD® in your dental routine is helpful as well.
