Common Gum Problems

It is estimated that between 75 to 95 percent of adults face gum problems. This is an overwhelming amount of people that are often uninformed about the gum disease condition and how to prevent the occurrence of issues like these. When one considers that gum disease most frequently doesn't come along with a lot or any pain, it is important for each and every individual to know what the warning signs are for gum and periodontal disease. Being informed is the only way to have a fighting chance against this problem. If any of these things begin happening to you, get dental help immediately.

  • Sore, tender gums
  • Bleeding gums
  • Mild bad breath or halitosis

Mild irritation due to dental work or injury is normal. Those types of things happen. You know you have gum problems though when the irritation is constant. This soreness and tenderness is probably a direct result of the gum disease causing bacteria. The bacteria is irritating the gums and causing that unpleasant feeling that you just can't escape from. Many people delay seeing a dentist because they believe the issue will pass and clear up on its own. If the soreness is due to gum disease, the problem won't get any better and further damage to the gums and teeth is just around the corner.

Another gum problem to be on the lookout for is bleeding gums. There is absolutely no healthy reason for the gums to bleed. Brushing the teeth and eating hard, raw foods like carrots shouldn't cause the gums to become irritated and bleed. Short of a tooth extraction or other dental procedure, the gums are at risk if you experience bleeding on a regular basis. Since the bleeding often only lasts a few moments it's easy to discount this symptom as just being the way things are. This isn't the way things are supposed to be and you should find good dental help to correct the problem.

It is common for everyone to experience mild bad breath or halitosis from time to time. When it becomes a common occurrence and you aren't having any success stopping the bad breath from happening, you are probably dealing with a case of gum disease. It is believed that halitosis is in part caused by a reduction of saliva. Drinking enough water would help you lose this embarrassing symptom.
