The Cause And Effect Of Gum InfectionGingivitis is an inflammation of the soft tissue of the gums (gingiva).Gingivitis is usually caused by bacteria that grow in the space between the gum and tooth where plaque is present. The bacteria cause damage to the gum tissue around the tooth. If the infection is not treated, bacteria will destroy the bone and soft tissue attached to the tooth. When plaque is not effectively controlled it builds up around the tooth often causing inflammation of the gums around the roots. The gums become pushed away from the root surface creating a pocket which the plaque settles. This becomes hard and cannot be removed without professional treatment. Bleeding gums when flossing and brushing is often an indicator that a problem may exist. This is the early stages of periodontal disease and is called Gingivitis. At some point during our lives most of us will experience some swelling of the gums. The reason for this can be as simple as a popcorn kernel getting stuck under the gum, areas where there are large gaps that floss does not clean effectively, or an isolated tooth that is more difficult to floss around. The bacteria that grow on plaque may continue to multiply if the immune system cannot protect the gum tissues from becoming inflamed. If, because of poor brushing and flossing, plaque is not removed, the condition will spread below the gum line and destroy the tissue connections and bone that support the tooth. This is the stage at which periodontitis develops. Gingivitis is a dental condition that can occur in childhood but more commonly first appears in early adulthood. Usually, gingivitis occurs when plaque forms in the space between the gum and tooth (the gum line known as gingival sulcrus). Bacteria thrive on plaque, cause inflammation of the gum and eventually damage gum tissue. If plaque is not routinely removed during regular brushing and flossing, the gum tissue around the teeth becomes red, swollen and bleeds after even gentle brushing. The keys to success in the battle against gum disease and most oral problems are hidden in nature. Fighting the bacteria that causes the problem is the first place to start and specific species of peppermint and spearmint oils are scientifically proven to be anti-bacterial, anti-fungal and anti-microbial.
