Causes Of Halitosis

There are more possible causes of halitosis than you may think. While you may know some of the more obvious causes of halitosis, these are really only a few of the possibilities. Here are more potential causes of this condition that you probably may or may not have known existed.

Dental Conditions

You probably knew that not exercising good dental hygiene like brushing your teeth and flossing could lead to halitosis, but do you know the exact conditions that can lead to halitosis? Conditions like plaque, tooth decay, tooth abscess, tooth infections, gingivitis, and gum disease can be more specific dental conditions that are underlying problems of halitosis.

Conditions Of The Mouth

Dental conditions are not the only ones that can hold the blame for halitosis. Conditions of the mouth can contribute to unfortunate bad breath symptoms too. Some mouth conditions that could be the reason behind bad breath are dryness of the mouth, ulcers of the mouth, or oral, pharynx, or larynx cancer. Even breathing through your mouth for prolonged periods can dry out the mouth which can lead back to halitosis.

Conditions Of The Throat

People often focus on the mouth as the source of bad breath, but it may be coming from the throat too. This is another long list of things that could be causing halitosis. This list includes infections of the throat, tonsillitis, adenoiditis, achalasia, and esophageal stricture.

Conditions Of The Nose

Again the nose is often forgotten as a location where bad breath can originate. It may not be common for these conditions to be the source of bad breath, but they are possibilities. Some conditions of the nose that could lead to halitosis are chronic sinusitis, atrophic rhinitis, and postnasal drip.

Other Causes Of Halitosis

The list of things that could be causing halitosis just keeps going. There are respiratory infections, lung diseases, hormonal disorders, and more conditions that can lead to halitosis. But just because there are many serious causes, that doesn’t mean that your halitosis is being caused by some obscure medical condition.

What Does This Mean For You?

If you have halitosis then you should know that you probably just have it because of one of the more common reasons. You will want to find out for sure, but try taking better care of your mouth, teeth, and gums using the OraMD 4-Step Oral Hygiene Program. Taking better care of your mouth is usually all it takes to make your halitosis go away.
