Curing Bad Breath with Essential Oils Is Both Safe and Effective

Curing bad breath can literally mean the difference between landing the big job (or that big date!) or promotion and simply being passed by due to unwritten corporate laws regarding oral hygiene and proper etiquette. But finding a bad breath cure that will last throughout the day and not let you down during a big meeting or interview…now that is indeed a challenge! There are literally hundreds, if not thousands, of so-called bad breath remedies on the market and most of them will let you down when you need them most!

If you look on the side of most bad breath products, you will likely find a label with a host of chemical ingredients on it, such as:

  • Chlorine Dioxide
  • Oxychlorine
  • Zinc Compounds
  • Alcohol

All of these ingredients will eliminate anaerobic bacteria which are the primary cause of bad breath in nearly 90% of the cases. These bacteria hide behind plaque because the thin layer creates a low-oxygen environment where saliva and most bad breath remedies cannot penetrate. Saliva is part of the body’s natural bad breath prevention system because it is enriched with oxygen and enzymes that help stimulate the creation of specialized enzymes. The enzymes help stimulate the production of antibodies that seek out and neutralize the anaerobic bacteria and thus help prevent bad breath.

However, synthesized ingredients and harsh chemicals may hamper salivation if they cause dehydration, a common side effect from using many of the bad breath remedies on the market today. Although the anaerobic bacteria population does need to be contained, organic and all natural ingredients can contain antiseptic agents that accomplish this without causing dry mouth or bad breath. In particular, the essential oils are a group of organic extracts enriched with a host of beneficial nutrients that help neutralize bacteria and stop bad breath before it even becomes a problem.

Peppermint oil is a common organic ingredient to find in many mouthwash and bad breath products. Menthol is the primary active ingredient and the medicinal benefits of peppermint oil depend on the concentration of menthol. Peppermint oil also contains phenol and eugenol-both of which have antiseptic properties and help restore oral flora (bacteria) to proper balance.

In total, there are over 150 essential oils and more seem to be discovered all the time. Spearmint oil is a close cousin of Peppermint oil and also helps with indigestion (by controlling the oral and the intestinal flora) which is why it is often chewed to alleviate cramping and problems with Irritable Bowel Syndrome. Other beneficial essential oils to look for when buying halitosis remedies include:

  • Almond oil
  • Eucalyptus oil
  • Lime or Lemon oil
  • Camphor oil

By avoiding a dry mouth, bad breath problems will be less severe so be sure to only use products made with all natural ingredients like any of the essential oils mentioned above. In addition, you can go a long way towards curing bad breath problems by remembering to brush daily and drink plenty of fluids to avoid dehydration and dry mouth.
