Can Natural Bad Breath or Herbal Remedy Really Help?

An all natural bad breath treatment or herbal remedy may not really seem like the most effective treatment option when there are so many "advanced" solutions available. These high-tech halitosis remedies promise to control bad breath all day but this is not always the case. In fact, it is quite common to find a bad breath product causing even greater problems because they are made from ingredients that cause side effects like dehydration and dry mouth.

A dry mouth may not seem like the end of the world but it will certainly make any bad breath prevention plan likely to fail. Xerostomia, the scientific name for dry mouth, leads to lower salivation rates and thus reduces the body's ability to prevent bad breath. Saliva helps control the bacteria that cause bad breath problems in three ways:

  • Removes food particles and dead skin cells: Bacteria need to eat just like any organism. However, abundant food sources in your oral cavity will lead to a larger bacteria population which also leads to more waste. Bacteria excrement are volatile and quickly turn into a gaseous state and cause the actual odors of halitosis. Saliva washes away both the food particles and dead skin cells (and lower bacteria population), it also removes the waste products themselves. Stimulating salivation with sugarless gum and other natural remedies will help control bacteria and halitosis problems.
  • Rich source of oxygen: Anaerobic (literally means "without oxygen") bacteria do not reproduce quickly in well-oxygenated environments which is why they tend to collect behind layers of plaque and/or tartar. Saliva is rich in oxygen so a well-salivated mouth will naturally lower bacteria levels and effectively prevent bad breath throughout the day.
Enzymes: Saliva is also enriched with specialized enzymes that stimulate the production of antibodies that directly control anaerobic bacteria.

Because alcohol and other chemicals commonly found in many of the best bad breath products on the market are more likely to cause dry mouth and lower salivation rates than those made from all natural ingredients, organic products are preferred so long as they also control bacteria levels. Essential oils like Almond Oil are enriched with nutrients that act as antibacterial agents and will not cause dry mouth or lowered salivation rates. Other organic and herbal bad breath remedies/ingredients include:

  • Spearmint Oil
  • Peppermint Oil
  • Eucalyptus Oil
  • Lemon Oil
  • Lime Oil
  • Adding apple cider vinegar to water (around 20% concentration)
  • Cardamom
  • Parsley

The essential oils are preferred ingredients to find in bad breath products because they are also enriched with other beneficial nutrients that help remove toxins and improve overall health. Using all natural products will help prevent dry mouth and bad breath and are critical to an effective halitosis prevention strategy. Aside from using a natural bad breath or herbal remedy, be sure to practice good oral hygiene and remain hydrated in order to stop halitosis and stay healthy.
