How To Prevent Bad Breath In Just 2 Minutes Per Day

You might believe that you already know how to prevent bad breath by using mints or specially formulated over-the-counter halitosis remedies. However, if you need to constantly use bad breath medicine, mints, or anything throughout the day-then you are merely masking the problem. There will typically be some underlying bad breath cause that must be addressed before the halitosis will go away and stay away throughout the day.

Most of us awaken each morning with bad breath in the morning and it should go away after brushing and flossing away the plaque on our teeth and soft tissue. When it comes to bad breath, bacteria are the actual culprits and they hide behind plaque because it is a low-oxygen environment and saliva cannot penetrate behind the protective layer. Preventing bad breath is often as simple as brushing and flossing but those who fail to do this when they awaken will develop worsening halitosis throughout the day because the bacteria population will grow quickly behind the plaque.

In time, the plaque will harden into tartar and the bacteria will breed even faster. The odors that we tend to associate with bad breath or halitosis are actually produced by the bacteria feces-known as Volatile Sulfur Compounds and the three most common include:

  • Hydrogen Sulfide
  • Dimethyl Sulfide
  • Methyl Mercaptan

In addition to brushing and flossing every morning, you also want to be sure and brush in between meals. The bacteria feed off of dead skin cells and food particles in our mouth. By brushing in between meals, you are actually treating bad breath by starving the bacteria so that they produce fewer of the compounds that cause bad breath.

Another quick way to prevent bad breath is to simply make sure that you drink plenty of fluids and keep well-hydrated. Saliva is well-oxygenated and loaded with enzymes that help control the bacteria and bad breath. Therefore, be sure to drink at least 1/2 ounce of water for every pound of body weight and be sure to avoid the following behaviors/products:

  • Drinking alcohol or using mouthwash or bad breath remedies made with alcohol (they may cause dehydration and thus lower saliva production)
  • Consuming caffeine
  • Using stimulants such as those found in laxatives and many dietary supplements
  • Some medications are known to be diuretic so increase water consumption to compensate if you notice any signs of dehydration (dizziness, dry mouth, lack of energy, headache)
  • Excessive talking/exercise

There is no real bad breath cure because the bacteria that produce the sulfur compounds are always present in your mouth at any given time. However, by following the simple tips listed above and using an all natural oral health product to help control the bacteria, then you know how to prevent bad breath effectively unless the problem is occurring as a result of another medical problem.
